Sri Lanka records a proud history of providing a holistic education to it’s offspring in moulding conscientious patriotic citizens from the system of Pirivena Education from its monastic colleges. The core of the principles of education centered round the teaching of the Buddha and the monks and the ‘gurus’ of the ancient system were inspired by the Buddha and the Buddhism was advocated as a major requirement of the education system.
The ancient system of education was disintegrated with the invasion of foreign powers from the neighboring India. Later the Portuguese , the Dutch and the British occupied the Sri Lankan territories and had the direct impact on the system of Education. . A new education philosophy evolved and the curriculum was developed to suit the needs of the multi ethnic , multi religious and multi lingual society. The aims of education took a different dimension of developing a balance personality in a pluralistic society.
Today Sri Lanka occupies an outstanding place in the literacy rate in Asia. New innovations are being added to the system providing educational opportunities, opening a gateway to the student population to cope with the developments of the 21 st century knowledge society. The improvement of Information Communication Technology (ICT) education is a priority. New models of Results based Management(RBM) highlighting the importance of the outcome of the educational activities are being introduced to the system gradually in keeping with the modern trends of education.
