Intel – International Science and Engineering Program

intel winnersIntel – International Science and Engineering Program is the largest competition in the world on school scientific research. The objective of this program is to develop new invention skills of the students throughout the world.

This program is conducted by the Science and Public Society since 1950 and the Intel organization holds the patronage of this since 1997. Eligible competitors for the final round of this competition are selected in May each year and the awards and scholarships worth of 4 million American Dollars are offered.

In 2014, about 1700 young scientists and future entrepreneurs representing 70 countries in the world will participate in the final competition from 11 to 16 May in the city of Los Angeles in the United States of America. This competition will be held in 17 fields such as Medical Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science.
The following students will participate in this competition representing Sri Lanka.

    Rakitha Dilshan Malewana – Nalanda College, Colombo – “using Nanithy technology for the prevention of cancer”
    Namal Udara Piyasiri – Thambuththegama Central College, Anuradhapura – “a machine to prepare the land for paddy cultivation”
    Nipun Kavishka De Silva – De Mazened College, Kandana – “a sports item equipped with an artificial intelligence for the blind”

Before leaving the country to take part in the competition, these students met the Secretary of Education Mr. Anura Dissanayake at the ministry of education on 07.05.2014. The Secretary of Education Mr. Anura Dissanayake offered his blessings to these students for their success at the competition and a gathering including the country manager of Intel Sri Lanka Institution Mr. Indika De Soyza, the director general of the national science foundation Ms. Anusha Amarasinghe, the Director of Education (Information and Communication Technology) Ministry of Education Mr. G.M. Niel Gunadasa and the teachers in charge of the participating students attended this occasion.
