Excess money collected for sports trips back to the parents – a red light from the minister of education to the sports clubs

sp2The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam while participating recently (09) in the inaugural function of modernization of the playground of Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya revealed that the excess money collected from the parents for a foreign Karate tournament by the School Karate Association was returned to the parents through the intervention of the ministry of education.

It has been revealed that the school Karate association had collected Rs. 115,000.00 from each competitor of a group of 30 competitors for the participation in a two day Karate tournament that was held in Malaysia last month.

But the investigation conducted by the ministry of education has found that only Rs.80,000.00 had actually spent for each competitor participated in this tour. When the relevant officers called to the ministry following a direction from the minister of education it was confirmed that more money had been collected from the students exceeding the actual amount spent for the tour.

Measures were immediately taken to return Rs. 35,000.00 that had been additionally collected from each student in the group of 30 students who had participated in the relevant tour. Accordingly the ministry of education took necessary action to return an amount of Rs. 1,120,000.00 (one million one hundred and twenty thousand) to the relevant parents.

Further revealing his ideas the minister of education stated that he will take maximum efforts to promote school sports. And also he reminded that he will take the lead to eradicate waste and corruption and will not hesitate to take any necessary decision for the promotion of school sports.
Several officers including The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Thilanga Sumathipala and Director for Sports in the ministry Mr. Manjula Kariyawasam had joined in the occasion.
