The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that it is possible to create a strong future nationally and internationally for the game of cricket in this country through the promotion of cricket within the schools. The minister expressed these ideas while participating in the function held at the BMICH today for the launching of three year national plan for the promotion of school cricket under the patronage of the Minister of Education and with the participation of the experts of cricket in Sri Lanka. The minister points out that the nursery of the development of cricket in this country is the school.

Therefore behind this endeavor there is no political agenda or any such camp and it is purely a step taken for the strengthening of future of the game of cricket in this country, the minister said. The minister further explained that it was decided for the Ministry of Education to act as the resource provider and the supervisor based on the professional knowledge of the cricket experts in the country since it is essential to take the expertise for this purpose.

The Minister of Education reminded that he provides the leadership not only for the development of cricket but for all other sports at school level and he expected to draw his attention for the promotion of school cricket within a background of the prestige of Sri Lanka built on the game of cricket. The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam further stated at this occasion that he hopes to draw the attention of the government for providing tax concessions in purchasing the equipment for cricket for the benefit of school cricketers.

At this occasion the three year national plan for the promotion of school cricket which was formulated on the basis of instructions and the knowledge of experts in cricket for the development of school cricket was handed over to the Minister of Education by Mr. Jayantha Senevirathna who is an experienced cricket coach and also an excellent cricket commentator.

Mr. Sidath Wettamuni, Mr. Roshan Mahanama and Mr. Mahela Jayawardana the experts of cricket in this country delivered lectures at this function on the different sections of the game of cricket. Several officers representing the field of school cricket including the principals, teachers and sports authorities had joined in this function.

The launching of school cricket national plan of action 2018 - 2020 and the workshop for sensitizing principals about it was held recently at the BMICH under the patronage of The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

The formulating committee of the national directing plan for school cricket with the aim of identifying the reasons affecting for the present downturn of national cricket and providing long term solutions for them was established under the instructions of the Minister of Education. The said committee comprising experienced cricketers in the country, cricket coaches and instructors, officers of the Sri Lanka School Cricket Association and the officers of the Ministry of Education prepared this plan after finishing several rounds of discussions under the leadership of the Minister of Education. These are the main proposals of this directing plan.

1. Proper arrangement of school cricket tournaments under 13, under 15, under 17 and under 19 as an avenue for reaching the national level
2. Providing necessary facilities for encouraging the participation of school cricketers and the establishment of health units for school cricketers
3. Development of necessary infrastructure for school cricket, turf wickets, matting wickets, concrete wickets, nets and indoor stadiums
4. Providing cricket sports equipment (Bowling machines, balls, marking boards, side curtains) and all other equipment
5. Provision of facilities necessary for school cricket including the coaches, umpires, physiotherapists and necessary financial allocations
6. Provision of scholarships necessary for the improvement of productivity of school cricketers and the coaches
7. Creating a national junior selection panel and formulating criteria for the provinces
8. Organizing international tournaments and tournaments outside of their own areas according to the relevant age groups
9. Conducting training programs using the outside resource persons on leadership, psychiatric counseling, prevention of bribery and corruption and sports ethics for cricketers and school administrators, Conducting trilingual programs on computer, cricket skills development and use of media
10. Establishment of a website for school cricket
11. Organizing training programs at school and provincial levels for all age groups
12. Development of cricket through increasing the coordination with external sponsoring bodies
13. Strengthening and sustaining the financial strength and the administrative structure of school cricket
14. Take action to recruit 200 cricket training instructors to serve in the schools
The Minister of Education expressed his thanks to the former experienced cricketers including Mr. Sidath Wettamuni, Mr. Jayantha Senevirathna, Mr. Roshan Mahanama, Mr. Muththaiya Muralidaran, Mr. Mahela Jayawardana, Mr. Roger Wijesuriya, Mr. Carlton Bernard, the officers of the Ministry of Education including the Additional Secretary Mr. Ashoka Senani Hewage, the officers of the Sri Lanka School Cricket Association who supported for the formulation of national directing plan for school cricket.
