Any injustice will not happen to the students who sat for the Advanced Level examination this time on the subject of Biology.

bioThe Commissioner General of Examinations Mr. B. Sanath Pujitha has confirmed to the Ministry of Education that the examination has been held in such a way that the candidates who sat for the Biology paper at the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level would not be subjected to any injustice. And also they will not be subjected to any injustice when the evaluations are done.

The comment made recently by the Colombo District Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila saying that a discrimination has happened to Sinhala students who sat for the Biology paper at the Advanced Level examination because of the teachers’ guide relevant to it, is a baseless statement made without probing the real facts. And also it is evident that the statement made there, mentioning as ‘students sat for the exam’ is a baseless one.

One aim of the education is to produce a citizenry with free and independent thinking for the country. For that purpose, it is a responsibility of an intelligent politician to provide opportunities for children to receive their education freely without any fear, doubt or interference. Therefore, negligence of that responsibility means none other than terrifying the children and darkening their future to achieve narrow political gains.

Verifying the facts related to this, the Director General of the National Institute of Education Dr. Ms. T.A.R.J. Gunasekara states that the Sinhala and Tamil medium teachers’ guides for advanced level Biology have been posted to all schools teaching that subject in the last week of February 2018 and the teachers’ guide for Biology were distributed during the teacher training sessions held between 11.06.2018 and 31.07.2018 for Sinhala and Tamil Medium schools teaching that subject in grade13. The Directress General further states that this teachers’ guide has been published in the web site of the National Institute of Education and in addition to that, this teachers’ guide has been printed and distributed among all the relevant schools by the Education Publications Department.

The female officer who headed the team of formulating the Biology syllabus has a degree in the field of Biology and not only this time, but she provided the leadership to the revision of Biology syllabus last time also. The language translation activities were done by the experts of the subject, the National Institute of Education says.
