Congratulations from the Minister of Education to the students who brought victory to Sri Lanka from the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad tournament.

oly The 16th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad tournament was held from 26th November to 01st of December 2019 in Hanoi city of Vietnam. A team of 15 including 12 students from Mathematics and Science sections and two officers (team leader and two Science and Mathematics tutors) who represented Sri Lanka at this event met the Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Dallus Alahapperuma yesterday (12) and he expressed his congratulations to these Olympiad champions.  

At this Olympiad tournament Sri Lanka was able to win one gold medal, one silver medal and three bronze medals from the Science section and five bronze medals from Mathematics section. Along with it, Athsara Fernando a student of Ananda College Colombo has won the gold medal of the Science section.

Muran Jathurshan of Vavunia Tamil School has won the silver medal. Sachiru Nanditha Subasingha of Anuradhapura Central College, Lakalna Amarajeewa of Girls’High School, Kandy and Shapthakie Senduran of Vavunia Rambekulama Girls’ School have won the bronze medals of Science section. In addition to this Safeek Jeena Nafrin of Milleth Mahliar Maha Vidyalaya Batticaloa  has received the participation certificate. Rohan Adithya Weerakoon of Badulla Central College, Manusha Shivakumar of Jaffna Wembady Girls’ High School, Thenuki Sinelika Bosirini of St. Joseph Girls’ School Kegalle, Thejitha Ekanayaka of Richmond College Galle and Gokula Nayanajith Bandara of Kurunegala Maliyadewa College have won the bronze medals from Mathematics section.  

Students from 26 countries have participated in the present International Mathematics and Science Olympiad tournament. So far Sri Lanka has been able to win 177 medals including 19 gold medals and 58 silver medals. The competitors for this tournament have been selected from among the students who achieve excellent results from school level up to zonal, provincial and national levels in Science and Mathematics sections. Special training was given to the students selected from the national level for international competition with the direct intervention of the Ministry of Education. The Minister of Education expressed his sincere thanks at this occasion to Ms. Gayanika Sumudu Assistant Director of Education of Dehiowita zone who worked as the team leader of this tournament, Mr. S.K.M.B.K. Bhanaguptha teacher of Maliyadewa Girls’ School Kurunegala who worked as the tutor of Mathematics, Ms. Dushma De Silva Deputy Director of Education of North Western Province who worked as the tutor of Science, the Directors of Education and the officers of Science and Mathematics branches in the Ministry of Education and all the officers who supported this virtuous act.
