Four more primary schools receive XO laptops

Four more primary schools received XO Laptops in a further stage of the “One Laptop Per Child “ (OLPC) pilot project started in 2009 to introduce Information and Communication Technology to primary school children.

Thirteen primary schools with classes from Grade 1 to Grade 5 have now been equipped with laptops under this project.

Official ceremonies to hand over the laptops to the four primary schools in Maho Educational Zone in the North Western province were held on February 17, 2012 under the patronage of Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardana.

The four schools are Eriyawa Junior School, Pothanegama Primary School, Jayanthipura Primary School and Guralupitigama Primary School.

World Vision Sri Lanka provided funds for the purchase of the laptops.

More than 800 subject-related software programmes related to the Grades 1 – 5 curriculum are part of the OLPC project. They were designed by competent ICT teachers of the subject related software pool at no cost.

Parliamentarian Tharanath Basnayake, members of the Provincial Council and other local government bodies, Director of Education of North Western Province J. G. N. Tillekaratne, Director of Education (ICT) of the Ministry of Education G. M..Niel Gunadasa, Maho Zonal Director of Education Ms Soma Ratnayake, representatives of the OLPC Sri Lanka Foundation, World Vision Chief Coordinator Sagara Gamage, ICT Director Kumara Lopez, principals and teachers of schools in the area and parents were among the large gathering present on the occasion.
