First “Mahindodaya” technological laboratory was declared open by His Excellency the President

In accordance with the Mahinda Chinthana vision for future prospectus, the first out of thousand “Mahindodaya Technological Laboratories”, which are being built under the 1000 secondary schools development project, was handed over to the students by His Excellency the President Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa the president of the democratic, socialist republic of Sri Lanka at 11.00am on 28.07.2012 at Kothalawalapura Maha Vidyalaya, Rathmalana. A large gathering including Hon. Minister of Education Mr. Bandula Gunawardana, Hon. Chief Minister of the Western Province Mr. Prasanna Ranathunga, Hon. Senior Minister Mr. A.H.M.Fousy, Hon. Monitoring MP for Education, Vocational and Skills Development Mr. Mohan Lal Grero, peoples’ representatives of the region, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education Mr.S.M. Gotabhaya Jayarathna, Provincial Secretary of Education Mrs. Jayanthi Wijethunga, Provincial Director of Education Mr. P.N.Illapperuma, senior officers of the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Department of Education, principals, teachers, parents and students participated in this occasion.

According to the plan of Mahindodaya technological laboratory, it is consisted of a complete science laboratory, mathematics laboratory, language laboratory, distance education unit and an information and communication laboratory equipped with 40 computers.

While addressing the gathering HE the President stated that the ultimate objective of the government in constructing these Mahindodaya technological laboratories, under the 1000 secondary schools development program, is to provide a suitable education which paves the way for various employment opportunities in different fields for the children who enter the world of tomorrow. Taking into consideration the fact that only about 23,000 out of total G.C.E. Advance Level qualified students get the opportunity to enter the government universities, these centers are established.

Addressing the audience at this function Hon. Minister of Education stated that in parallel to this opening of the Mahindodaya technological laboratory by the HE the President, same type of laboratory is being declared open by Hon. MP Namal Rajapaksa at Pitipana Mahinda Rajapaksa Vidyalaya, Homagama on the same day. Along with the opening of this laboratory, the same type of laboratories will be constructed in all the other schools that come under 1000 secondary schools development project. And this program will make the concept of free education which was introduced by Hon. C.W.W.Kannangara more meaningful and it will be the turning point of current education system; he added.

He further stated that the ministry has already recruited 1000 graduates of information and communication technology as teachers for these Mahindodaya technological laboratories. The significant feature of the construction of this laboratory is the reduction of the estimated cost of 100 million to nearly 5 million without any provision from the government and it happened under the personal supervision and interference of Hon. Mr. Mohan Lal Grero.

Hon. MP Mr. Mohan Lal Grero expressed his thanks to Vallibel Finance Company that provided about 5 million rupees for the construction of this complete building. He further thanked the public representatives including the Mayor of Dehiwala- Mount Lavinia and the people of the area. He stated that the students of the primary schools in the catchment area of this school will also be benefited from this valuable facility when they are enrolled in the grade six of this school in the future.

At the end of the function HE the President went to the audience and engaged in a friendly discussion with the parents and the students of the area who participated in the function.
